6.3-Magnitude Quake Rocks East Nusa Tenggara; Authorities Report No Tsunami Threat

6.3-Magnitude Quake Rocks East Nusa Tenggara; Authorities Report No Tsunami Threat

Post by : Rameen Ariff

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake rattled Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province in the early hours of Monday, prompting regional authorities to monitor conditions closely but reporting no immediate harm. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the tremor occurred at 00:04 a.m. Jakarta time, with its epicentre located about 82 km northwest of North Central Timor Regency and a focal depth of 75 km.

Residents felt a distinct, short-lived shaking, yet officials confirmed there was no tsunami potential after the event. Local emergency coordinators said the quake caused concern but not panic. “The tremors were felt by residents here but did not trigger panic. So far, there have been no reports of damage or casualties. We continue to monitor potential risks,” said Gasper Losa Manisa, head of the East Nusa Tenggara Disaster Management Agency.

BMKG logged the epicentre at 9.06 degrees south latitude and 123.97 degrees east longitude. Seismologists have cautioned that aftershocks are possible, though they do not expect immediate escalation to a larger seismic event.

Disaster-response teams remain alert and are undertaking checks to detect any structural weaknesses or delayed injuries that may emerge. The incident underscores Indonesia’s ongoing exposure to seismic activity because of its position along the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Authorities urged residents to stay calm and keep emergency supplies accessible in case of subsequent tremors. The quake has again highlighted the value of preparedness measures and reliable early-warning systems in earthquake-prone regions.
