The Emirates College for Advanced Education marked the successful conclusion of its 12th Annual Autism Forum, highlighting its dedication to inclusive education and advocacy for individuals with autism spectrum disorder in the UAE.
The forum took place over two days with the theme “Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value,” gathering educators, specialists, policymakers, families, and collaborators to explore the future of inclusive education while fostering partnerships in the educational realm. This event coincided with Autism Awareness Month and aligns with the UAE's Year of Family initiative.
Discussions centered around the importance of empathy, empowerment, and actionable solutions aiming to enhance the quality of life for those with autism, promoting their inclusion in society. An annual initiative by ECAE, the forum serves as a vital platform for sharing knowledge, best practices, and dialogue aimed at enhancing inclusive learning environments for all students.
Dr. May Laith Al Taee, Vice Chancellor of ECAE, emphasized that inclusive education is a collective responsibility beginning with families and extending to schools and society. She underlined the necessity for creating educational spaces that offer equal opportunities for everyone to learn and participate actively.
On the first day, attendees discussed recent advancements in inclusive education, covering collaborative teaching strategies, community partnerships, and effective educational methods tailored for autistic learners. Experts presented research-backed methods intended to enhance inclusive education systems.
The forum also included an “Inspirational Stories” segment, featuring a film and book aimed at fostering empathy and comprehension surrounding autism.
Day two shifted focus towards the meaningful inclusion of children with autism spectrum disorder and stressed the critical collaboration between families, educators, and specialists. Sessions delved into the significance of research-informed education and community-based inquiries in enhancing inclusive practices and achieving long-term benefits.
A broad coalition of key organizations including the Ministry of Education, Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination, Special Olympics UAE, and University of Birmingham Dubai partnered in organizing the forum, all committed to bolstering inclusive education in the region.
In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, ECAE is also engaging in ongoing activities and initiatives, including panel discussions and awareness events through its “I Learn” and “I Care” initiatives, which emphasize the crucial role families play in nurturing inclusive-minded children and enhancing community integration.
