Egypt Demands FIFA Investigation Into Referee After World Cup Exit Against Argentina

Egypt Demands FIFA Investigation Into Referee After World Cup Exit Against Argentina

Post by : Rameen Ariff

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has officially filed a complaint with FIFA following Egypt's dramatic 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16. The federation has accused the match officials of making serious refereeing errors and inconsistent VAR decisions that it believes directly affected the outcome of the match.

The complaint was submitted by EFA President Hany Abou Rida, who requested FIFA to launch a formal investigation into French referee Francois Letexier and his entire officiating team. Egypt has also asked FIFA to remove the referee and his crew from the remainder of the FIFA World Cup after reviewing the incidents.

Egypt's Complaint Against the Referee

According to the Egyptian Football Association, several key decisions during the match raised serious concerns over fairness and consistency.

In its official statement, the EFA said it could not remain silent after witnessing what it described as controversial refereeing decisions and the improper use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

The federation stated that multiple football experts and refereeing analysts, both in Egypt and internationally, had questioned several important decisions made during the game.

The EFA believes these decisions influenced the result of one of the biggest matches in the tournament and has urged FIFA to uphold the highest standards of transparency, integrity, and fairness in World Cup officiating.

VAR Decision Sparks Major Controversy

One of the biggest talking points came in the 58th minute when Egypt appeared to score what would have been their third goal of the match.

However, after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was ruled out because officials determined an Egyptian player had committed a foul on an Argentine defender during the build-up.

Had the goal stood, Egypt would have taken a commanding 3-0 lead.

Instead, Argentina remained in the match and produced a remarkable comeback by scoring three goals within a 13-minute period late in the second half to secure a 3-2 victory and advance to the quarter-finals.

The disallowed goal has become the central issue in Egypt's complaint to FIFA.

Hossam Hassan Criticises Match Officials

Following the match, Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan expressed his frustration with the officiating.

He stated that there had been "neither respect nor fair play" during the game and argued that Argentina did not deserve to win based on how the match was officiated.

His comments reflected the disappointment felt throughout Egyptian football after surrendering a two-goal advantage in one of the tournament's most dramatic matches.

Egypt Calls for Referee Suspension

As part of its official submission, Egypt has requested that FIFA:

  • Investigate referee Francois Letexier and the complete officiating team.
  • Review all controversial decisions made during the match.
  • Examine the application of VAR during key moments.
  • Suspend the referee and his officiating crew from working any further matches at the FIFA World Cup 2026 if errors are confirmed.

The Egyptian Football Association says these measures are necessary to protect the credibility and fairness of international football.

Argentina Advances to the Quarter-finals

Despite trailing for much of the match, Argentina completed one of the tournament's biggest comebacks to defeat Egypt 3-2.

The victory secured Argentina a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals, where they are scheduled to face Switzerland.

The dramatic turnaround has become one of the most talked-about matches of the tournament, not only because of Argentina's comeback but also due to the growing controversy surrounding the refereeing decisions.

Egypt Extends Hossam Hassan's Contract Until 2030

Despite the disappointing World Cup exit, the Egyptian Football Association has shown confidence in head coach Hossam Hassan by extending his contract.

EFA President Hany Abou Rida confirmed that the federation's board approved new contracts for both Hossam Hassan and team director Ibrahim Hassan.

Hossam Hassan, 59, took charge of Egypt in February 2024 and guided the national team to the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations before leading them to the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Earlier this year, Hassan revealed that he had been working without a formal contract since February 2026. Local reports indicate that his new agreement will keep him in charge of Egypt until 2030, allowing him to continue preparations for future international competitions, including the next Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualification campaigns.

What Happens Next?

FIFA has not yet responded publicly to Egypt's complaint or announced whether an official investigation into the referee will be launched.

The governing body is expected to review the match report, VAR footage, and the EFA's submission before deciding whether any disciplinary or administrative action is necessary.

Meanwhile, Argentina will continue its World Cup campaign in the quarter-finals, while Egypt begins planning for the next stage of its international football journey under Hossam Hassan.
