Egypt has officially secured a spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a commanding 3-0 victory over Djibouti on Wednesday. The win makes Egypt the third African nation to qualify for next year’s tournament in North America, joining Morocco and Tunisia.
In Casablanca, Mohamed Salah scored twice following Ibrahim Adel’s opening goal to seal Egypt’s triumph. This result keeps Egypt unbeaten in Group A with an unassailable 23 points. Burkina Faso, who defeated Sierra Leone 1-0, remain in second place in the group standings.
Meanwhile, Cape Verde and Ghana have inched closer to World Cup qualification. Cape Verde drew 3-3 away against Libya in a thrilling Group D clash, leaving their qualification hopes alive ahead of their final match against Eswatini. Despite coming from behind and nearly securing a stoppage-time winner, Cape Verde were denied by a controversial offside call. A win at home on Monday will see them become the second smallest nation ever to play in a World Cup.
Ghana, who reached the quarter-finals in 2010, strengthened their position in Group I with a 5-0 victory over the Central African Republic in Meknes. Goals from Mohammed Salisu, Thomas Partey, Alexander Djiku, Jordan Ayew, and Kamaldeen Sulemana gave Ghana a three-point advantage over Madagascar. A single point in their final group game against Comoros will be enough to guarantee qualification.
Other notable results from African qualifiers on Wednesday included Cameroon’s 2-0 win over Mauritius, Mali’s 2-0 victory at Chad, Ethiopia’s 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau, and Angola’s 2-2 draw at Eswatini under new coach Patrice Beaumelle.
With Egypt officially qualified and teams like Cape Verde and Ghana on the brink, African football fans are eagerly awaiting the conclusion of the qualifiers to see which nations will join the continent’s representatives in World Cup 2026
