An Indian nurse working in Singapore has been sentenced for assaulting a male visitor at a major hospital, pointing to significant violations of trust within healthcare. Elipe Siva Nagu, 34, was given a sentence of 14 months, including two cane strokes, after admitting to the molestation charge.
The incident took place in June at Raffles Hospital while the victim was visiting his grandfather. Evidence presented in court indicated that Elipe Siva Nagu suggested he needed to “disinfect” the man, using soap as a pretense before committing the act. The victim, reportedly paralyzed with shock, experienced subsequent flashbacks of the disturbing encounter.
Immediately following the incident, Elipe Siva Nagu was suspended from his nursing role. Prosecutor Eugene Phua shared that the assault occurred while the visitor was in a patient’s restroom. Details that could reveal the victim's identity have been withheld from the public.
Reported on June 21, the case saw Elipe Siva Nagu arrested just two days later. The judge highlighted the gravity of the crime, noting the critical trust placed in healthcare workers. This sentencing is a clear message against misconduct within medical environments, reinforcing the necessity for patient safety and professional integrity.
This case has raised alarms regarding hospital security and the ethical obligations of healthcare workers to safeguard both patients and their families. Hospital management and authorities are committed to enhancing measures to avert such alarming incidents in the future.
