Emergency Declared as Severe Flooding Hits Western Manitoba

Emergency Declared as Severe Flooding Hits Western Manitoba

Post by : Shweta

In the wake of relentless thunderstorms, western Manitoba is grappling with extensive flooding that has led to emergency evacuations and widespread destruction. Local officials reported that approximately 150 residents have been displaced as they work to evaluate the situation and restore vital services.

The chaos commenced on Sunday evening when the Parkland region was inundated with rainfall, submerging neighborhoods in flash floods. The Swan Valley area bore the brunt, with critical infrastructure being compromised as roads were washed out and bridges sustained significant damage, with homes engulfed by water.

Swan Valley West Reeve Bill Gade noted the flooding escalated frighteningly fast, with water levels rising inches per minute. Many residents found themselves trapped inside their homes, needing to evacuate to rooftops as they awaited rescue.

Emergency responders began their efforts using fire trucks to reach those stranded but faced challenges as conditions worsened, nearly trapping rescue vehicles. Zodiac boats were later deployed, and heavy agricultural equipment was utilized to rescue individuals from roofs.

By Monday night, Manitoba Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor announced that all affected residents had been accounted for, saying, "To our knowledge, everyone is safe." Provincial emergency squads are collaborating with local leaders to establish food supplies, medical aid, and various resources for those displaced.

The rainfall totals in the hardest-hit areas were alarming; Environment Canada recorded around 72 millimeters in the Swan Valley region in just a few hours, with Minitonas seeing nearly 148 millimeters overnight, branding it one of the most severely impacted locations.

Minitonas-Bowsman Municipality has issued a local state of emergency due to flooding disrupting essential services and infrastructure. Residents were advised to stay indoors while emergency teams address the crisis.

Compounding the situation, power outages led to diminished water pressure, prompting officials to issue a boil water advisory, and a ruptured gas line required the evacuation of parts of a neighborhood. Authorities have cautioned the public to tread carefully near flooded roadways and water crossings.

Several highways across western Manitoba have been closed due to flooding. The 511 highway information service reports significant washouts and flooded roads. Barricades have been placed where feasible, with the RCMP assisting local entities.

The Town of Swan River, neighboring the inundated communities, has extended a helping hand to residents affected by the floods. Mayor Lance Jacobson expressed alarm over the potential long-term ramifications on agriculture, highlighting the extensive damage to farmland.

He remarked that many farmers in the area might struggle with the repercussions of extensive flooding, and some fields could entirely lose their crops this season.

Additionally, severe storms brought strong winds and large hail throughout Manitoba, with wind speeds recorded at over 110 kilometers per hour and golf-ball-sized hail reported in the Canupawakpa Dakota Nation. Tornado warnings issued during several storms have not yet confirmed any tornado occurrences.

Meteorologists are predicting a short reprieve in the weather, but more heavy rainfall could return on Tuesday, raising concerns about further floods in already saturated areas.

As recovery efforts gain momentum, provincial authorities and community leaders are concentrating on restoring services, examining infrastructural damage, and facilitating a safe return to homes for all residents. The full impact of the disaster may only become clear once the waters subside, allowing thorough evaluations to commence.
