Emma Raducanu Withdraws from Wimbledon Due to Injury

Emma Raducanu Withdraws from Wimbledon Due to Injury

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Wimbledon’s opening day brought contrasting narratives, with Emma Raducanu’s withdrawal due to injury overshadowing men’s world No. 1 Jannik Sinner’s campaign start after adjusting to the sweltering heat.

Raducanu's Early Exit

The British tennis star, ranked 30th, has regrettably withdrawn from Wimbledon following a late medical examination that confirmed a stress fracture in her right leg. Raducanu was set to face Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic in her opening match on Court One.

Initially, she expressed intentions to compete amid discomfort, but subsequent evaluations revealed a worsening condition, leading to her premature exit from the tournament.

Sharing her thoughts via Instagram, she stated: "Despite my efforts to participate, the final scan revealed that what started as a niggle has now resulted in a stress fracture."

She continued: "I’m advised by medical professionals to refrain from pushing through the pain."

Another Setback for Raducanu

This withdrawal signifies yet another challenging moment in Raducanu’s career, plagued by injuries and health issues since her triumphant 2021 US Open victory.

Having enjoyed a successful grass-court season and reached the Queen’s Club final alongside coach Andrew Richardson, her recurring leg injury proved too overwhelming. She had already missed practice sessions earlier in the week and ended her training prematurely on Saturday before the injury was confirmed.

Sinner Shapes His Training for Success

While Raducanu’s journey has concluded before beginning, Jannik Sinner, the top seed among men, gears up for his Wimbledon debut after revamping his fitness regimen.

The 24-year-old Italian seeks to put behind his recent second-round exit at Roland Garros, where cramping hindered his performance against Juan Manuel Cerundolo despite a leading position.

With the UK experiencing unprecedented warmth lately, Sinner’s team has made pivotal adjustments to his training to ensure he’s equipped for the heat.

Adjustments for Heat Conditions

Although the anticipated temperatures for his opening match against Miomir Kecmanovic will be somewhat lower, Sinner acknowledges that high heat is becoming a consistent challenge in professional tennis.

Discussing his preparations, Sinner remarked: "All assessments have gone well, but we definitely need to train under more intense heat conditions."

He elaborated: "Everywhere we play, it seems the weather is getting increasingly hot. Each year feels warmer than the last."

Acknowledging the pressures of real match conditions that are difficult to replicate in training, Sinner confirmed that his team is focused on long-term strategies to enhance his physical readiness.

Wimbledon Opens with Mixed Fortunes

As Wimbledon officially commences, Emma Raducanu’s aspirations of competing before her hometown crowd have been dashed due to injury, whereas Jannik Sinner embarks on his title pursuit after fine-tuning his training to adapt to the evolving demands of modern tennis.
