In a surprising development, England has opted to include all-rounder Will Jacks in their squad for the upcoming second Ashes Test set in Brisbane. At 27 years of age, Jacks takes the place of Shoaib Bashir, bolstering England’s spin capabilities while also adding strength to their batting order. Although he has previously participated in two Tests three years back in Pakistan, recently Jacks has primarily played limited-overs cricket.
With paceman Mark Wood unable to participate due to an injury, England had to make strategic adjustments. They chose to reinforce their spin attack rather than opting for an additional seamer, selecting Jacks over Josh Tongue and Matthew Potts. Bashir, who has become England’s go-to spinner with 68 wickets to his name across 19 Tests, remains an emerging player. This tactical shift aligns with the requirements for an upcoming day/night Test at the Gabba, where spinners like Australia’s Nathan Lyon are crucial.
Jacks made a notable impression during the pre-series warm-up at Lilac Hill while representing the England Lions, claiming wickets from renowned batsmen such as Ben Stokes, Joe Root, and Harry Brook. On his Test debut in Multan, he recorded figures of 6-161 in 40.3 overs. Despite limited appearances since, he played three first-class matches last summer for Surrey, capturing five wickets at an average of 38.80. His off-spin bowling is a valuable asset, although his robust batting and fielding are often emphasized.
Captain Ben Stokes highlighted the pivotal role of including a spinner for the day/night match, explaining that spinners maintain bowler rotation and pressure under challenging lighting conditions. Jacks’ presence enables England to preserve their seam attack, keeping bowlers like Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, and Stokes in prime condition while enhancing batting capabilities lower in the order.
Recognized for his aggressive play, Jacks has notched four first-class centuries, adding versatility to England’s batting and fielding. Rob Key, the managing director of men’s cricket, acknowledged that while Jacks is still developing as a spinner, he offers valuable contributions with his batting, making him a well-rounded addition to the squad.
The addition of Jacks alters the team's dynamics, providing England with a player who can fulfil varied roles. His spin bowling introduces an alternative option for bowling rotations, while enhancing the depth of the lower-middle order. Bashir's exclusion for the second consecutive Test underscores the competitive spirit in team selections.
In injury news, Australia opener Usman Khawaja has been ruled out due to a back issue. Travis Head will remain in the opening slot, while Beau Webster and Josh Inglis vie for Khawaja’s position. England’s strategic decision to bring Jacks aims to capitalize on tactical advantages against Australia’s lineup in Brisbane.
