England's Josh Tongue Believes Team is Ready for Ashes Challenge in Australia

England's Josh Tongue Believes Team is Ready for Ashes Challenge in Australia

Post by : Maya Rahman

Fast bowler Josh Tongue has conveyed his belief that England is thoroughly prepared for the upcoming Ashes series in Australia, banking on a potent bowling lineup to break a long-standing winless streak down under. England hasn't claimed an Ashes victory since 2015, and their last series win in Australia dates back to 2011. Following a series of heavy losses on their last three tours, Tongue is optimistic this squad can turn the tide.

The series opener is set to commence on Friday in Perth. England's preparation consisted of just one warm-up game against the England Lions at Lilac Hill, a decision that has faced scrutiny from analysts and ex-players. Nevertheless, Tongue is upbeat about the team's readiness leading into the series.

In a press briefing on Tuesday, Tongue remarked, “It's an exhilarating feeling. Our preparation has been solid. Several of us were in New Zealand recently gearing up for this. I believe we have adequately prepared.” He emphasized the talent within England's bowling department, pointing out Jofra Archer and Mark Wood as the “X Factor” that could make a difference.

Tongue also highlighted the suitability of the fast, bouncy Australian pitches for their bowling approach. “The pace and bounce certainly favor fast bowlers and our skill set as a unit. I believe we can give them a real contest,” he said, showcasing England's confidence to take on Australia despite previous challenges on their soil.

England has gained an advantage for the opening Test, with Australian skipper Pat Cummins and veteran pacer Josh Hazlewood sidelined due to injuries. However, wicket-keeper Jamie Smith stressed that Australia remains formidable. “Their bowling attack is still strong... While we're missing two world-class players, the replacements are also excellent competitors,” noted Smith, who is 25.

Smith continued, mentioning that whenever facing Australia, the substitutes stepping in are top-quality players. “You have to respect those who can't play, and those who come in will also be very capable. Our focus lies on what we can do effectively as we approach this first Test,” he commented.

England’s confidence stems from the depth and balance within their bowling lineup, characterized by both experience and pace. Bowlers like Tongue, Archer, and Wood are expected to take full advantage of the Australian conditions to apply pressure on the home side. The series will challenge both teams' adaptability and performance under pressure, especially in Perth, renowned for its quick, bouncy pitch.

As the Ashes series looms, England's emphasis is on preparation, unity, and optimizing their bowling strengths. With key Australian players unavailable and their bowlers in peak form, England is poised to disrupt Australia's historic dominance in the series, eyeing a strong start with a competitive first Test.
