England fast bowler Mark Wood is expected to miss the second Ashes Test against Australia after developing pain in his left knee, according to reports on Saturday. The setback has raised concerns for England ahead of the crucial pink-ball match in Brisbane, especially as the series has already started on a difficult note for the visitors.
Wood returned to Test cricket in Perth last week after spending nine months on the sidelines following surgery on the same knee. The 35-year-old bowled only 11 overs across both innings and finished wicketless as England slipped to a heavy eight-wicket defeat within two days. His reduced workload during the match and visible discomfort afterward have added to worries about his availability.
Speaking to Fox Cricket during the first Test, Wood admitted he would not be able to play all five Ashes matches this year. He explained that he needs to assess his body after every game, especially given his recent injury history.
England will now face the challenge of adjusting their bowling attack for the second Test, which begins on Thursday under lights. The day-night conditions in Brisbane often favor pace bowlers, making Wood’s likely absence a significant blow. Team management is expected to monitor his fitness closely while exploring alternative options to strengthen their lineup.
As the Ashes series continues, England will hope to recover quickly from their early loss and find the right balance in their squad to challenge Australia in the upcoming matches.
