US Forces Target Iranian Tankers Amid Rising Tensions in Hormuz

US Forces Target Iranian Tankers Amid Rising Tensions in Hormuz

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In a significant escalation of tensions, the United States has taken action against two Iranian oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz following confrontations between US and Iranian military forces.

The US military reported that the Iranian vessels were attempting to breach a blockade when they were struck on Friday. Footage from the military captured fighter jets targeting the smoke stacks of the tankers. This incident follows reports of damage to another Iranian tanker from a US airstrike earlier this week.

These confrontations erupted after Iran was accused of launching missile strikes against three US Navy vessels in the strategic Strait. The Pentagon confirmed that US forces effectively defended their ships, subsequently targeting Iranian military facilities. Fortunately, no US vessels sustained damage during these operations.

Simultaneously, the United Arab Emirates reported fresh missile and drone assaults from Iran, leading to injuries among three individuals. The UAE Defense Ministry announced the successful interception of two ballistic missiles and three drones, though the full scope of the threat remains unverified.

This uptick in violence has reignited fears regarding the stability of a ceasefire that has persisted for nearly a month. The US is awaiting a response from Iran concerning a proposal to de-escalate tensions, reopen Hormuz, and regulate Iran's nuclear ambitions.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed hope for a "serious offer" from Iran in the near future, asserting that any aggression towards American forces would be met with decisive military action.

Iran has criticized the US military's actions, framing them as a breach of the ceasefire. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the US of preferring military confrontation over diplomatic solutions.

Since the conflict ignited on February 28 due to US and Israeli military actions, Iran has largely restricted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the globe's key oil shipping lanes. Interruptions in this route have led to surging global fuel prices and market instability.

Amid the military activity, a cargo vessel caught fire, resulting in one casualty and injuries to 10 others, although it is unclear if this ship was among those targeted by the US.

Additionally, maritime experts noted significant oil spills near Iran's Kharg Island terminal, with estimates suggesting up to 80,000 barrels may have leaked into the Gulf. The cause of this spill is still undetermined, but analysts speculate it could stem from recent military actions.

Environmental specialists warned that the oil spill could potentially reach the shores of the UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia within weeks unless conditions improve, although some believe the spill may dissipate offshore.

US President Donald Trump has maintained that the ceasefire is still in effect but has warned Iran of possible large-scale military responses if diplomacy does not yield results.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif revealed his government's ongoing communications with both Washington and Tehran to mitigate the situation.

The unrest is affecting global shipping routes, with many commercial vessels stranded in the Persian Gulf as Iran seeks to assert control over the Strait of Hormuz. This situation has raised international concerns about the safety of oil transport and trade in the area.
