Europe held off a determined challenge from the United States to win the Ryder Cup 15-13 in a thrilling finale at Bethpage Black, Long Island. The closely fought contest saw Europe needing just two points from the 11 singles matches to secure the trophy, but the US made them battle until the final moments.
Europe captain Luke Donald, the first to win back-to-back Ryder Cups since the 1980s, called it “the most stressful 12 hours” of his life. Ireland’s Shane Lowry kept Europe on track with a crucial six-foot birdie on the last hole of his match, tying Russell Henley and securing a key half-point. Englishman Tyrrell Hatton then clinched the outright win with a half-point against Collin Morikawa, confirming Europe’s victory.
Europe have now won 11 of the last 15 Ryder Cups since 1995, marking their fifth triumph on foreign soil. The US team, despite support from home fans and even President Donald Trump, could not overcome Europe’s teamwork and clutch performances.
The singles matches saw intense competition, with Cameron Young and Justin Thomas winning early on, giving the Americans hope. Xander Schauffele and Ludvig Aberg also contributed points, but Europe’s consistent play and key moments from Lowry and Hatton proved decisive.
Rory McIlroy, who endured much of the crowd’s verbal abuse, celebrated Europe’s road victory, saying the team had confidence and determination to retain the cup. The event highlighted Europe’s strong camaraderie, resilience, and strategic play under pressure, adding another memorable chapter to Ryder Cup history.
