Wildfire Near Sundre Sparks Evacuation Alerts in Alberta

Wildfire Near Sundre Sparks Evacuation Alerts in Alberta

Post by : Shweta

Authorities in central Alberta have issued an evacuation alert for areas surrounding Sundre as a wildfire rages out of control. The blaze, located approximately 30 kilometers northwest of Sundre, has rapidly expanded owing to strong winds and arid conditions. Emergency officials have urged residents, campers, and travelers in nearby regions to stay vigilant as firefighting efforts continue against the swift-moving fire.

As per Alberta wildfire officials, the fire's growth accelerated in the late afternoon and evening with wind gusts peaking at nearly 65 kilometers per hour. By Thursday evening, the wildfire had exceeded 130 hectares and remained classified as uncontrolled. Smoke plumes were visible across multiple communities, with residents noting its scent from considerable distances.

Emergency alerts have particularly affected the junction of Highways 734 and 584, prompting immediate evacuation orders for campers and backcountry users in the vicinity. Nearby rural residents have also been placed on evacuation alert, advised to have essential items ready in case a mandatory evacuation becomes necessary. While no immediate threat exists to significant towns, precautions are being undertaken due to fluctuating winds and erratic fire behavior.

Firefighting teams, including helicopters, air tankers, and heavy machinery, are actively working to control the flames. Alberta Wildfire officials noted that smoke has occasionally hampered air operations, complicating firefighting efforts. Ground teams continue to establish containment lines while closely observing weather trends in the area.

Transportation has also been impacted, with parts of Highway 40, known as the Forestry Trunk Road, being temporarily closed due to smoke and reduced visibility. Drivers are advised to avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas and stay updated with emergency information.

Provincial authorities have highlighted that Alberta is facing a precarious start to the 2026 wildfire season, attributed to exceptionally dry spring weather and above-average temperatures. The dry vegetation combined with strong seasonal winds has heightened the risk of fast-spreading wildfires in various forested zones.

The Sundre wildfire is among several active blazes across Alberta. Recent wildfire emergencies in the province have led to evacuations near Whitecourt and Woodlands County due to encroaching flames.

Local officials are keeping a close watch on the wildfire situation, indicating that more evacuation commands might follow if weather conditions worsen. Residents have been urged to prepare emergency kits, keep critical documents accessible, and stay informed via Alberta emergency alerts for the latest updates while crews work to contain the fire.
