Dutch ethical electronics maker Fairphone has officially entered the U.S. market with a line of repairable headphones, positioning the product as an initial step toward a future smartphone introduction and a push for longer-lasting consumer tech.
Aiming at Right-to-Repair Demand
Fairphone CEO Raymond van Eck said the United States is increasingly sympathetic to right-to-repair ideas, with consumers and policymakers resisting devices that are costly or difficult to fix. That shift creates an opening for brands that prioritise repairability and product longevity.
“Our approach accounts for uncertainty. Tariffs change, but the appetite for repairable devices is evident,” van Eck said.
Growth and Market Potential
The company reported strong momentum in 2025: third-quarter revenue rose 61% year-on-year, device sales climbed 61%, audio product sales increased 40%, and spare-part sales grew 41%. Fairphone aims to replicate its European audio sales performance in the U.S.
Products currently face a 34% tariff, yet Fairphone continues to emphasise supply-chain transparency and sustainability, from responsibly sourced mines to traceable chips.
Long-Term Support as a Differentiator
Fairphone highlights extended product support as a market differentiator. The Fairphone 6 is backed by a total support window of eight years, five years of warranty coverage, and spare parts availability scheduled through 2033 — measures designed to cut electronic waste and promote mindful consumption.
Strategic U.S. Launch
The headphones will first be available via Amazon, a strategic entry point in a market where more than 90% of smartphones are sold through carriers. This phased roll-out reflects careful planning amid changing tariff conditions.
As sustainability and repairability become more influential in purchase decisions, Fairphone's U.S. debut could signal a meaningful shift in consumer electronics toward durable, repair-first alternatives.
