Bollywood actor and director Farhan Akhtar recently addressed the situation regarding Amitabh Bachchan's previous comments about feeling like a “nausikhiya” during the filming of Lakshya.
In an episode of Aap Ki Adalat, Farhan explained that his intentions were never to instruct Big B on how to act. He noted that his actions may have been misinterpreted, stemming from his lack of experience and the stringent atmosphere prevalent in the Army cantonment where the movie was shot.
Farhan reflected on the challenges he faced directing his first film within such a disciplined setting, juggling strict time constraints while ensuring that each scene was completed efficiently.
“It was the inaugural day of filming, and I felt immense pressure to adhere to the schedule. I thought it would be prudent to have a chat with Mr. Bachchan to see if there was anything I could do to facilitate the process,” Farhan explained.
He further illustrated that he approached Amitabh, citing a delay in his scene delivery as the reason for his concern.
“I visited his room and expressed, ‘Sir, if you’re facing any challenges, I’m here to help.’ Looking back, I realize this may have conveyed a different message,” he admitted.
Farhan remarked, “My enthusiasm as a novice director might have given off the impression that I was attempting to direct him, which was never my goal. Following the incident, I apologized because I simply aimed for a smooth shoot.”
Previously, during an episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 17 with Farhan and his father, renowned lyricist Javed Akhtar, Amitabh shared his perspective on the matter.
He recalled feeling uncomfortable on the first filming day and struggling with his performance. “The atmosphere was quite distinct for me. Numerous retakes led to my embarrassment,” he reminisced.
Bachchan mentioned that Farhan did check in on him later that night, which he humorously interpreted as being told how to act. “I told Jaya, ‘They think I don’t know how to act!’ She advised me to leave if I was uncomfortable, but I chose to stay, and the following days were seamless,” he shared.
In spite of the initial miscommunication, both actors have conveyed mutual respect. Amitabh frequently appreciates Farhan’s creative approach, while Farhan considers Big B a significant influence in his filmmaking journey.
Their collaboration on Lakshya not only marked a pivotal moment in Farhan’s career but also offered priceless experiences that enriched his directorial skills.
Released in 2004, Lakshya marked Farhan Akhtar's second directorial project after Dil Chahta Hai. The film, featuring Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta, and Amitabh Bachchan, is set against the backdrop of the Kargil conflict.
Though it initially struggled at the box office, the film has since gained a devoted fanbase for its inspirational narrative, stellar performances, and captivating direction, often considered one of Bollywood’s hidden gems.
Farhan Akhtar is set to star in 120 Bahadur, directed by Razneesh Ghai. This film, based on true events, features him as Major Shaitan Singh and is scheduled for release on November 21.
Amitabh Bachchan is currently the host of Kaun Banega Crorepati 17 and is gearing up to begin filming the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD, helmed by Nag Ashwin, with production anticipated to start in December.
