In a poignant session of the trial for criminal negligence related to a fatal dog attack in Edmonton, the father of 11-year-old Kache Grist shared his harrowing experience. This tragic incident has stirred significant concern across Canada as alarming facts unfold.
Wesley Grist recounted the fateful day in April 2024 when his son was attacked by two Cane Corso dogs in the Summerside neighborhood. The dogs belonged to Crystal MacDonald, who has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges of criminal negligence.
During his testimony, Grist revealed that he first heard noises coming from the kitchen and found his son on the floor surrounded by blood. Initially thinking the dogs were simply wreaking havoc, he soon understood the grave reality. He described his frantic attempts to rescue Kache while fighting off the dogs.
The bond between father and son was emphasized during the court proceedings as Grist referred to Kache as his "best friend." He noted that the boy was visiting for spring break and enjoyed a close relationship with MacDonald, referring to her affectionately as "aunty."
On the day of the incident, Grist had been working in the garage while Kache was inside playing video games—one dog was inside with him, and the other stayed outside. Grist entered the house moments later only to discover the horrifying attack.
Medical reports revealed that Kache succumbed to severe injuries on his neck. Following the attack, both dogs involved were euthanized. Prosecutors highlighted a concerning history of aggressive behavior from these dogs prior to the incident.
Testimony included statements from another victim, who reported serious injuries from a prior attack by the same dogs just two months before Kache’s death, raising alarm about the dogs’ history.
This case has ignited major discussions about dog ownership, animal control regulations, and public safety in Alberta. Many are questioning the inaction that preceded the tragedy, igniting conversations about the adequacy of current laws to prevent such incidents in the future.
The emotional testimony has left a profound impact on those present in the courtroom, with legal analysts suggesting that this trial may serve as a critical case in how Canadian law addresses owner negligence and dangerous animals.
