FIFA has unveiled an exciting lineup of technological advancements for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, aimed at enhancing officiating precision and optimizing team performance analysis, alongside offering an improved experience for spectators globally.
Taking place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, the tournament will be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Johannes Holzmüller, FIFA's Director of Innovation, shared these developments during a virtual media roundtable from the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) in Dallas.
A standout feature will be the launch of Advanced Semi-Automated Offside Technology, marking the first time FIFA will implement this system during the World Cup.
This innovative technology promises to deliver clear offside determinations directly to match officials on the field, significantly expediting the process compared to the previous Video Assistant Referee (VAR) method. This shift aims to streamline the identification of positional offsides, minimizing interruptions during gameplay.
Nonetheless, it is crucial to note that this system exclusively addresses positional offside calls; any instances involving player interference will continue to necessitate assessment by match officials.
To enhance system accuracy, each player will be subject to a 3D scanning procedure, enabling the development of digital avatars that can be incorporated into the offside technology framework. These virtual representations will also elevate the quality of 3D match replays featured in broadcasts.
Additionally, FIFA has launched Football AI Pro, an innovative generative artificial intelligence tool that will equip all 48 participating teams with state-of-the-art match analysis capabilities.
This platform aims to grant teams swift access to match data for efficient analysis before and after matches. FIFA asserts that this technology ensures equitable access to premier football analytics, independent of a team’s budget or technical expertise.
Another significant enhancement includes the adoption of referee body cameras. Initially trialed during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, this advanced version significantly minimizes motion blur and delivers clearer footage from referees’ perspectives during games.
FIFA anticipates that this upgraded visibility will bolster transparency, enabling fans to better grasp refereeing decisions while enhancing the overall viewing experience.
Moreover, each World Cup venue will be outfitted with 16 optical tracking cameras, capable of generating upwards of 150 million tracking data points within every match.
This extensive data collection will facilitate the full 3D recreation of matches, support VAR processes, provide advanced content to broadcasters and media partners, and fuel the Football AI Pro analysis system.
Through these groundbreaking technologies, FIFA aims to transform the 2026 World Cup into the most technologically sophisticated tournament in football history, enhancing officiating precision and enriching experiences for teams, broadcasters, and fans alike.
