The governing body of world football, FIFA, has decided to withdraw its proposal to invite private investments into significant tournaments after facing widespread critique from various football organizations across the globe.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced on Friday that the proposal will not progress, emphasizing that FIFA's primary objective has consistently been to unify and enhance football worldwide.
“After carefully considering all perspectives, it is evident that the initiative has fostered divisions that are contrary to the original aims,” Infantino remarked.
Earlier in the week, FIFA proposed the creation of a commercial arm called FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), projecting that the venture could potentially amass up to $4.2 billion, based on a valuation of $20 billion.
This proposed entity was expected to oversee commercial aspects related to major FIFA competitions, such as the FIFA World Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
As part of the initiative, FIFA's 211 member associations could have received a one-time payment of $20 million by early 2027, with plans to increment funding for the 2027-2030 cycle from $8 million to $20 million.
Immediate backlash arose from numerous key football organizations. UEFA voiced strong disapproval, cautioning that its national teams might withdraw from FIFA events if the proposal persisted.
Both the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and CONCACAF raised concerns about permitting private investors in FIFA's commercial framework.
Critics argued that involving private ownership could jeopardize the established governance structure of the global football scene.
This controversy prompted the resignation of Carlos Cordeiro, a senior advisor at FIFA, who condemned the plan.
Cordeiro characterized the initiative as “a detrimental agreement for FIFA’s member associations, detrimental for football, and harmful to the sport's future.”
His resignation further intensified the pressure on FIFA's leadership to revisit their investment approach.
President Gianni Infantino stated that the proposal aimed to fortify football associations and increase financial backing globally. Nevertheless, he recognized that the widespread dissent resulted in divisions contrary to FIFA's goals.
He clarified that the plan would only have been implemented if a majority of stakeholders had shown support.
In light of the backlash from football federations and officials, FIFA opted to withdraw the proposal to maintain harmony within the international football community.
