Bangladesh's Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) has issued a special flood outlook, warning that short-term and flash floods could affect at least 10 districts across the country's northern and northeastern regions over the next 24 to 48 hours. The alert follows intense rainfall across Bangladesh and neighboring Indian states, causing major rivers to rise rapidly.
The FFWC said heavy to very heavy rainfall in Bangladesh, along with upstream downpours in the Indian states of Assam, Meghalaya, and West Bengal, has significantly increased water levels in several major rivers. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as additional rainfall is expected to worsen flood conditions in vulnerable areas.
According to the latest flood bulletin, two major rivers have already crossed their danger levels at three monitoring stations.
In Sylhet, the Kushiyara River is flowing:
Meanwhile, in Netrokona, the Someshwari River has exceeded its danger mark by 19 centimetres at Kalmakanda, resulting in flooding across nearby low-lying communities.
The FFWC forecasts that water levels in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers will continue to rise over the next three days, increasing flood risks in Sylhet and Sunamganj.
Other rivers, including the Sarigowain and Jadukata, are also experiencing rising water levels, raising the likelihood of temporary flooding in nearby low-lying areas.
Officials further warned that the Bhugai, Kangsha, and Someshwari rivers are expected to swell further within the next 48 hours, potentially worsening flooding in Sherpur, Mymensingh, and Netrokona districts.
In northern and northwestern Bangladesh, water levels in the Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers are increasing rapidly.
The Teesta River has already reached its warning level at:
The FFWC estimates these rivers could cross danger levels within the next 24 to 48 hours, creating a significant risk of flash floods in:
Residents in these districts have been advised to stay alert and closely monitor official flood updates.
The Brahmaputra-Jamuna river system has been showing a steady upward trend over the past five days, according to the FFWC.
The Brahmaputra River has already reached its warning level at Chilmari station in Kurigram.
Forecasts indicate that within the next 24 to 72 hours, water levels may approach warning limits at several additional monitoring stations, increasing flood risks for low-lying areas in:
Authorities are monitoring the river system closely as continued rainfall upstream could accelerate the rise in water levels.
In Rajshahi Division, the Atrai and Chhoto Jamuna rivers are also expected to overflow into surrounding low-lying areas.
The FFWC predicts temporary flooding may occur within the next three days, particularly affecting Naogaon and Natore districts.
FFWC Executive Engineer Sardar Udoy Raihan said that persistent heavy rainfall both inside Bangladesh and in upstream Indian regions over the next 24 hours is likely to increase the risk of flash floods in vulnerable low-lying areas across Rangpur, Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Mymensingh divisions.
He noted that while flood conditions in parts of Sylhet are expected to worsen during the next two days, there is currently no indication of a major or prolonged flood event. However, local authorities continue to monitor the evolving situation and have urged residents living near rivers to remain cautious and follow official advisories.
