The US airline sector is facing unprecedented disruptions, with more than 2,800 flights cancelled and over 10,000 delayed, fueled by an ongoing federal government shutdown. This crisis has been exacerbated by federally mandated flight reductions impacting aviation operations.
Air traffic controller shortages, resulting from the prolonged shutdown now in its 40th day, have prompted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to instigate a series of flight cutbacks, marking the third day of such measures as of Sunday, November 9.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has alerted travelers that conditions may deteriorate further as Thanksgiving approaches, traditionally one of the busiest travel periods in the country, affecting millions of passengers.
The FAA's directive led to an initial 4% reduction in daily flights at 40 major airports beginning Friday, with cutbacks increasing to 6% on Tuesday and potentially reaching 10% by November 14. Major airlines such as United, Delta, American, and Alaska Airlines are urging Congress to pass legislation to end the shutdown to mitigate further disruptions.
In a recent development, the US Senate took steps to advance a bill aimed at terminating the shutdown, nudging airline stock prices up in pre-market trading. Notably, United Airlines shares increased by 1.9%, while Delta and American Airlines both rose by 1.4%, and Alaska Air saw a 1% uptick.
American Airlines has underscored the seriousness of the situation, expressing concern for travelers who are dealing with delays and cancellations while unpaid federal employees struggle. The airline asserted, “Our customers have endured thousands of delays and cancellations, and federal aviation employees deserve to be paid.”
In light of the ongoing government shutdown, travelers are encouraged to verify their flight statuses and anticipate possible delays in the coming days, particularly at key holiday travel locations.
