Brussels and Charleroi Airports Suspend Operations After Suspected Drone Sightings

Brussels and Charleroi Airports Suspend Operations After Suspected Drone Sightings

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Air traffic at Brussels Airport was temporarily paused on Tuesday after several suspected drone sightings triggered security concerns. A spokesperson said both arrivals and departures were suspended while authorities assessed the risk.

Charleroi Airport, Belgium’s second-largest, also halted operations as officials investigated. No timeline has been given for when normal services will restart.

Skeyes, the Belgian air traffic control agency, is probing the reports but has yet to issue an official statement. The episode follows a string of drone-related disruptions across Europe, including recent incidents near airports and military sites in Germany and Denmark.

Officials noted the incidents come days after drones were detected over the Kleine-Brogel military base, a location believed to host U.S. nuclear assets. Belgium’s military intelligence service has opened an inquiry to establish who was responsible and why.

Defence Minister Theo Francken warned it was premature to attribute blame but suggested the operations bore the hallmarks of professional, coordinated activity intended to 'create alarm and destabilise' the country.

Against the backdrop of heightened geopolitical tensions tied to the war in Ukraine, some officials are examining possible links to Russia, though no conclusions have been reached. Investigations into the Brussels and Charleroi incidents are continuing.
