Since late October, relentless rainfall has caused catastrophic flooding in south-central Vietnam, severely impacting both popular tourist spots and mountainous areas. As of November 23, the Ministry of Environment reported that the death toll has risen to 90, with 12 individuals still unaccounted for.
Dak Lak province has been particularly hard-hit, experiencing over 60 fatalities since November 16. Thousands of households are submerged, prompting mass evacuations. The coastal city of Nha Trang and the hill town of Da Lat have also faced significant challenges, with landslides obstructing critical transport routes.
Major highways remain impassable due to flooding and landslides, hampering efforts for both rescue operations and repairs. Currently, more than 129,000 people are without electricity, though this is an improvement from over a million affected just a week prior.
The floods are estimated to have caused economic damages of approximately 343 million USD across five provinces. Although Vietnam is no stranger to heavy rainfall from June to September, experts attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of storms to climate change driven by human activity.
In total, natural disasters, including floods and storms, have resulted in 279 deaths or missing persons in Vietnam this year, with damages exceeding 2 billion USD, as reported by the national statistics office.
Authorities are diligently engaged in rescue and relief operations as the rainy season comes to a close, aiming to restore vital infrastructure and provide support to affected communities.
