Four police corporals in Kuala Lumpur have pleaded not guilty to charges of allegedly extorting RM10,000 from a salesman in a case that has attracted public attention in Malaysia. The accused officers appeared before the Magistrate’s Court, where they denied all allegations brought against them.
The four men, identified as Mohd Al Hafis Sairudin, Mohd Azmi Mohd Ghozali, Muhamad Azlan Zakaria, and Muhammad Hanif Abdul Talib, were jointly charged under provisions of the Penal Code related to extortion. Prosecutors allege that the officers intimidated a salesman, Danny Goh Ngee Guan, by making him fear he could face a court fine of at least RM50,000.
According to the charge sheet, the alleged incident took place at an apartment in Jalan Kepong, Sentul, on December 23, 2023. Authorities claim the victim handed over RM10,000 after being placed under pressure and fear of legal consequences.
The offence falls under Section 384 of Malaysia’s Penal Code, read together with Section 34, which deals with acts committed by several individuals with a common intention. If convicted, the accused could face imprisonment of up to ten years, a fine, whipping, or a combination of these penalties.
During the hearing, Deputy Public Prosecutor Amritpreet Kaur Randhawa opposed bail, noting that the offence is categorized as non-bailable. However, defense counsel Ahmad Ikram Ab Halim argued that all four accused had cooperated fully with investigators and were the primary financial providers for their families.
After considering submissions from both sides, Magistrate Farah Nabihah Muhamad granted bail of RM8,000 to each accused. The court also imposed strict conditions, including monthly reporting at the nearest police station and a prohibition on contacting or interfering with witnesses and the complainant.
The case has raised fresh discussions about accountability and public trust in law enforcement institutions. Legal proceedings will continue as investigators and prosecutors present evidence before the court. The next mention of the case has been scheduled for July 8, when further developments are expected to be reviewed.
