A significant wildfire has erupted in the Herault and Aude departments of southern France, prompting the deployment of hundreds of firefighters. Strong winds and ongoing drought have caused the blaze to spread rapidly, complicating firefighting efforts.
As of late evening, officials reported that approximately 800 hectares had been consumed by the fire. Though emergency teams have contained parts of the blaze intermittently, it remains largely uncontrolled. A prefecture source noted, “While parts of the fire are contained, it is not fully under control,” around 11:00 pm (2100 GMT).
The fire has presented significant challenges due to the hilly terrain, which restricts access to many affected areas. To enhance the firefighting response, aerial support has been deployed to drop water on the flames from above.
Worsening weather conditions have also escalated the situation, with temperatures nearing 30°C and strong winds allowing the blaze to spread swiftly through dry underbrush.
Local authorities announced that about 200 residents were evacuated or advised to stay indoors in Pouzols-Minervois and Mailhac as the fire edged closer to populated areas.
One evacuee, 99-year-old Danielle from Pouzols, shared her experience with the oppressive smoke: “The smoke was so dense and suffocating that the firefighters told us to evacuate,” she recounted.
The wildfire ignited shortly after a deadly heatwave impacted much of Europe, with forecasts predicting further extreme heat. This incident also follows significant wildfires in the Corbieres region last year, underscoring the persistent risk of wildfires in southern France during hot and arid conditions.
Additionally, local firefighters have addressed two smaller wildfires near Marseille, maintaining heightened readiness across the region's emergency services.
