French cyclist Charles Coste, who held the distinction of being the world’s oldest living Olympic gold medallist, has died at the age of 101. His death marks the end of a remarkable era in French sports history, celebrated for resilience, passion, and Olympic excellence.
Coste passed away on Thursday, as confirmed by French media. He was a member of the French team pursuit cycling squad that captured gold at the 1948 London Olympics, alongside Pierre Adam, Serge Blusson, and Fernand Decanali. Their victory came just three years after World War II, symbolizing France’s sporting resurgence and national pride.
Born in 1924, Coste became a prominent name in track cycling and later achieved significant success in road racing. One of his most notable victories came in 1949, when he triumphed in the Grand Prix des Nations, a 140-kilometer time trial where he famously defeated Italian legend Fausto Coppi, a multiple Tour de France and Giro d’Italia winner.
His contributions to French cycling went far beyond his competitive years. Coste remained an ambassador for the sport, frequently attending events and supporting young cyclists.
Following the passing of Hungarian gymnast Agnes Keleti at age 103 in January 2025, Coste became the oldest living Olympic gold medallist in the world. He also carried the Olympic torch during the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony, a poignant moment that celebrated both his legacy and the enduring spirit of the Games.
Tributes have poured in from the cycling community and sports enthusiasts worldwide, honoring Coste’s longevity, sportsmanship, and historical achievements.
His life serves as a reminder of an era when perseverance defined athletes, and victory symbolized more than a medal—it represented hope, unity, and resilience in post-war Europe.
Charles Coste’s name will remain etched in the history of the Olympics as one of France’s most cherished champions.
