French Student Faces Jail Over Viral Act

French Student Faces Jail Over Viral Act

Post by : Shakul

A French student is facing serious legal consequences in Singapore after a video showing him performing an inappropriate act with a vending machine straw went viral online. The incident has sparked widespread public outrage and drawn the attention of local authorities.

The accused, identified as Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien, allegedly filmed himself licking a straw from a juice vending machine and placing it back into the dispenser. He later shared the video on social media, where it quickly spread and triggered strong reactions from viewers.

The incident reportedly took place at a shopping centre, where the vending machine operator, iJooz, took immediate action after learning about the situation. The company replaced all 500 straws in the machine and conducted additional hygiene checks to ensure public safety.

Authorities charged the student with public nuisance and mischief. Under Singapore law, public nuisance can result in a prison term of up to three months along with a fine, while the mischief charge carries a maximum penalty of two years in jail, a fine, or both.

The case has once again highlighted Singapore’s strict legal framework, especially regarding public behavior and hygiene standards. Even actions that may seem minor in other countries can lead to serious consequences under local laws.

Following the charges, the student was granted bail, and his family reportedly traveled to Singapore to support him. A representative from his educational institution has also been assigned as his bailor while the case proceeds in court.

The student is enrolled at a branch of a French business school operating in Singapore, which confirmed his status but refrained from making detailed comments due to the ongoing legal process.

Legal experts note that prosecutors believe the video was shared with the awareness that it could cause public annoyance and damage the company’s reputation. This has strengthened the case against the accused.

As the next court hearing approaches, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting local laws and social norms, especially in countries known for strict enforcement. The outcome of the case will be closely watched both locally and internationally.
