The Florida Gators achieved a notable 82-68 victory against the Miami Hurricanes during the Jacksonville Hoops Showdown, marking Miami's first defeat of the season. Anticipated as a tightly contested match, Florida delivered a compelling performance on offense and defense. With this win, the Gators improved their record to 3-1, while Miami also fell to 3-1.
Alex Condon was a key figure in Florida's success, scoring 19 points and securing seven rebounds before receiving his fifth foul with just over five minutes remaining in the second half. His effective shooting, including 8 out of 12 field goal attempts and two three-pointers, played a significant role in Florida's momentum, particularly during pivotal moments. Condon's presence in the paint also challenged Miami's defense.
Thomas Haugh contributed significantly with 17 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, particularly excelling in three-point shooting, which was crucial for providing Florida with key momentum shifts. Rueben Chinyelu also shone with a double-double, tallying 16 points and 12 rebounds, despite fouling out six minutes before the end. His dominance in the paint was vital in establishing Florida's early lead. Urban Klavzar added 15 points, shooting 4-for-7 from three-point range.
On the Miami side, Malik Reneau stood out with 22 points and 11 rebounds before foul trouble limited his time on the court. Reneau, a former Florida recruit, kept Miami in contention during the first half. Tru Washington scored 16 points, while Trey Donaldson contributed 11 points, four rebounds, and six assists. However, Miami struggled at the free-throw line, converting just 56% of their attempts, which hindered their efforts in keeping the game competitive.
The Hurricanes began strongly, with Washington scoring the opening layup. But Florida quickly surged ahead after Condon's three-pointer ignited a 9-0 run. Miami fought back, with five consecutive successful shots, including a three-pointer from Donaldson, which briefly granted them a 13-12 lead.
As the first half progressed, both teams exchanged baskets with Florida once again seizing the lead when Klavzar hit three free throws. Condon’s late first-half putback resulted in a 26-21 lead with six minutes remaining, and Haugh’s deep three-pointer extended the gap, sending Florida into halftime ahead 39-29, with Condon as the top scorer at 15 points.
The second half saw Miami come out with energy, reducing the deficit to 44-41 after a 7-0 run, highlighted by Washington's layups. However, Florida countered with improved ball movement and resilient defense. Although both Chinyelu and Condon faced foul troubles, Florida maintained its scoring. Haugh’s three-point play and long-range shooting enabled the Gators to pull ahead to 67-50 with under eight minutes to go.
Florida retained control of the game, as Miami struggled to find scoring consistency. Using effective teamwork and strategic plays, the Gators secured the well-deserved victory, showcasing their strength, balance, and determination.
