The 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has officially kicked off in Istanbul, welcoming parliamentary leaders from various nations to confront urgent global issues tied to peace, development, and governance.
The inaugural session featured diverse participation from global speakers and legislative heads. Notably, a delegation from Qatar’s Shura Council made its presence felt, led by Speaker Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim.
Emphasis on Peace and Sustainable Development
Leaders during the session highlighted the pressing need to bolster international parliamentary collaboration to address escalating global challenges. Key discussions focused on the necessity of preserving international peace and fostering sustainable development for future generations.
The assembly is centered around the theme “Nurturing hope, securing peace and ensuring justice for future generations.” Notable was a recorded message from António Guterres, who articulated vital global priorities, such as peace, social justice, and strides toward sustainable development.
The IPU noted that this year’s gathering occurs amid complex global conditions that necessitate synchronized, multi-level parliamentary strategies. Significant issues on the agenda include international peace and security, governance after conflict, and achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Qatar’s Commitment to Climate Efforts
Qatar's involvement extends to the 5th Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network, where legislators tackled the escalating need for climate-resilient urban development.
Ahmed bin Hitmi Al Hitmi addressed the session, pointing out the mounting pressures of climate change on developing nations, citing issues like resource scarcity and environmental hazards. He advocated for enhanced resilience in urban planning approaches.
Furthermore, he reaffirmed Qatar’s dedication to sustainability within the framework of its National Vision 2030, mentioning significant forward steps in sustainable infrastructure, clean energy expansion, and better resource management.
He acknowledged the crucial role of the Shura Council in furthering these initiatives through legislative and oversight actions, asserting that global climate challenges necessitate robust parliamentary cooperation—especially in areas such as climate finance, technology transfer, and capacity building.
