Indonesian Ministry of Health has warned that the world is facing a growing sleep crisis, highlighting the importance of quality rest during World Sleep Day 2026. Health officials stressed that good sleep is as essential to overall health as proper nutrition and regular physical activity.
According to the ministry’s director for vulnerable group health services, Imran Pambudi, quality sleep is not only about the number of hours spent in bed but also about meeting the body’s physiological needs. This year’s theme, “Sleep Well, Live Better,” aims to raise awareness about sleep habits, particularly among people living in cities where work schedules and artificial lighting often disrupt natural sleep cycles.
Sleep Deprivation Linked to Serious Health Risks
Health experts say sleep plays a crucial role in restoring the body by consolidating memory, regulating mood, and removing toxins from the brain. Lack of sleep can reduce cognitive performance, slow reaction times, and weaken short-term memory. Over time, chronic sleep deprivation can increase the risk of serious conditions such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.
A global survey conducted by ResMed in 2025 involving more than 30,000 respondents found that many adults fail to achieve the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Studies also indicate that people over the age of 50 frequently experience declining sleep quality, which may increase risks of frailty, mild cognitive impairment, and early mortality.
Experts Recommend Better Sleep Habits
Health officials recommend several steps to improve sleep quality, including maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, limiting screen exposure at least an hour before bedtime, and creating a quiet, cool, and dark sleeping environment. Reducing caffeine and alcohol consumption before sleep can also help improve rest quality.
Experts also advise people experiencing persistent sleep problems to consult medical professionals, as untreated sleep disorders can significantly affect both physical and mental health. They emphasize that improving sleep habits is essential for maintaining productivity, emotional stability, and long-term health.
