In the inaugural showdown of the Players Era men's championship, No. 12 Gonzaga secured a decisive 95-85 victory over No. 8 Alabama on Monday night in Las Vegas. The Bulldogs demonstrated high energy and tactical prowess on both sides of the court, proving their offense's depth as multiple players contributed significantly.
Graham Ike was a standout performer, leading the charge with 21 points and 11 rebounds. His robust presence in the paint provided crucial support during pivotal moments, helping stabilize the team's rhythm amidst Alabama's scoring bursts. Tyon Grant-Foster mirrored his efforts, also tallying 21 points while infusing vitality into key stretches of the game.
Additionally, Braden Huff contributed significantly with 18 points, shooting an impressive 9-of-12 from the field. His scoring ability around the basket was integral in maintaining control, especially during slower offensive periods. Meanwhile, Steele Venters sunk four 3-pointers for a total of 12 points, which effectively kept Alabama's defense unsettled. Mario Saint-Supery added 10 points and dished out six assists, ensuring fluid offensive operations.
On the other side, Alabama's Labaron Philon Jr. emerged with 29 points and seven assists, pushing tempo to keep the Crimson Tide competitive. Amari Allen and Aiden Sherrell contributed 14 points each, while Aden Holloway added 13 points, hitting several crucial baskets that sustained the tension late into the game.
The match was tightly contested, with both teams exchanging leads frequently. Alabama briefly surged ahead with a swift 10-0 run, capped by a sharp 3-pointer from London Jemison. However, Gonzaga showcased composure and recalibrated, reclaiming momentum with effective shooting and strategic interior play.
A pivotal moment occurred late when Grant-Foster executed a spectacular alley-oop dunk from Ike, leveling the score at 71. Moments later, a swift steal led to a breakaway dunk, catalyzing an 11-0 run that shifted the game's trajectory dramatically. Grant-Foster concluded this streak with two free throws, extending Gonzaga's advantage to 86-74, providing crucial breathing room as they finished the game strong.
Key to the Bulldogs' success was their rebounding effort, dominating the boards with 48 rebounds versus Alabama's 36, a difference that translated into 25 second-chance points. Controlling the boards in a tight game was instrumental in their triumph.
Furthermore, Gonzaga outscored Alabama in the paint, 52-42. Adam Miller, who struggled in the first half, quickly added seven points early in the second half, including a crucial 3-pointer that pushed Gonzaga to a 60-51 lead.
Though Alabama fought valiantly and regained the lead momentarily when Holloway netted a corner 3-pointer to bring the score to 71-69, Gonzaga quickly reasserted control and maintained their lead thereafter.
Gonzaga will next face Maryland on Tuesday, while Alabama prepares for a matchup against UNLV.
With a blend of potent scoring, disciplined defense, and effective teamwork, Gonzaga affirmed their status as one of the nation’s elite programs.
