A significant antitrust lawsuit has been initiated against Google in the United Kingdom, accusing the tech giant of exploiting its dominant status within the online display advertising sector.
Representing British advertisers, the lawsuit seeks a staggering £3 billion (approximately $4 billion) in damages. The complaint, spearheaded by KP Law, asserts that Google has unfairly boosted its own ad services, thereby stifling competition from rivals.
The allegations suggest that Google leveraged its market influence to prioritize its own display advertising solutions, including website banner advertising, which allegedly compelled advertisers to incur elevated costs for less effective services.
This class action lawsuit encompasses all UK advertisers who availed themselves of Google's advertising services since October 1, 2015, unless they explicitly opt out.
In response to the claims, a Google spokesperson dismissed them as “meritless”, asserting that advertisers opt for their services due to their “simple, effective and affordable” nature.
Furthermore, Google remarked that the lawsuit has yet to be formally served.
This latest legal duel forms part of the increasing global scrutiny surrounding Google’s advertising operations. The company is presently entangled in multiple investigations and lawsuits across the UK, EU, and US concerning allegations of anti-competitive behavior.
Last year, a separate UK lawsuit accused Google of overcharging businesses for online advertising services. Additionally, a claim valued at £13.6 billion, representing online content creators, was sanctioned in 2024 to proceed to trial.
In the US, regulatory bodies are pushing for structural changes to reduce Google's hold on the digital advertising market.
Previously, in a landmark ruling, the European Union levied a hefty 2.95 billion euro fine against Google for allegedly prioritizing its own advertising offerings over those of competitors. The tech company plans to contest this ruling.
