The Federal Government has firmly denied recent rumours claiming that Tuaran Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau, has been appointed as the new chairman of Labuan Corporation (LC). This clarification comes amidst growing public discussions and social media posts speculating about his possible leadership role in Labuan’s local authority.
The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Federal Territories, Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, issued an official statement today to address these circulating rumours. She clearly stated that no appointment has been made yet for the post of LC chairman and urged the public not to spread unverified information that could cause confusion among the people of Labuan.
Dr Zaliha explained that the Federal Government, through the Department of Federal Territories, is currently still in the process of reviewing and evaluating several qualified candidates for the chairman position. The process involves detailed scrutiny of each potential candidate’s capabilities, track record, and suitability to lead Labuan Corporation towards greater growth.
She stated, “The rumours and speculations circulating about the Tuaran MP assuming the position are not true. We are carefully scrutinising several potential individuals for the chairman post.”
The minister further emphasised that the government’s main priority is to identify and appoint the most suitable person who can serve the best interests of Labuan’s socio-economic development. This person must be capable of managing the island’s growth effectively, understanding the needs of the local community, and implementing development projects that benefit the people in the long term.
She said, “We are seriously looking into the right person to lead Labuan Corporation, someone capable of driving the island’s growth and addressing the needs of the community.”
Labuan Corporation plays a critical role as the local authority responsible for managing and overseeing the development, infrastructure, services, and progress of Labuan as a Federal Territory. Its responsibilities include:
Because of these important responsibilities, the government wants to ensure that the chairman appointed will be able to fulfil these tasks efficiently and drive Labuan’s progress forward.
Dr Zaliha also urged the public to avoid spreading untrue rumours or assumptions about this matter, as such speculation could mislead and confuse the people of Labuan. She reminded everyone that only official announcements from the government should be trusted regarding such key appointments.
The chairman post at Labuan Corporation became vacant after the former chairman, Tan Sri Anifah Aman, who is also the former Member of Parliament for Kimanis, concluded his term last month. Since then, discussions about who would be appointed as the next chairman have been ongoing among political circles and local communities.
Dr Zaliha assured that the Federal Government remains committed to ensuring the right person is appointed to lead Labuan Corporation. The selected chairman must not only be capable of driving development projects but also uphold transparency, accountability, and the interests of Labuan’s residents.
She further emphasised that once a final decision is made on the appointment, it will be officially announced to the public, ensuring transparency and clarity in the government’s actions.
This detailed and cautious approach by the government highlights its focus on long-term planning for Labuan’s socio-economic growth. The decision on who will lead Labuan Corporation is crucial as it will determine the island’s development strategies, public service delivery, and economic opportunities for years to come.
With Labuan being a vital Federal Territory known for its financial services, tourism, and oil and gas sectors, the appointment of a strong and visionary leader will help the government achieve its goals of turning Labuan into a progressive, economically resilient, and sustainable island city.
