A serving officer of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force has been arrested after allegedly unlawfully entering the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo, triggering diplomatic concerns between Japan and China.
The suspect, identified as Kodai Murata, a 23-year-old second lieutenant stationed at Camp Ebino in Miyazaki Prefecture, was detained on Tuesday morning after allegedly climbing over the embassy wall and entering the premises without authorization.
According to investigators, embassy staff initially apprehended the officer before notifying the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. A knife was later discovered near the scene, although no injuries were reported during the incident.
Chinese authorities stated that the intruder issued threats against diplomatic personnel, prompting a formal protest from Beijing. Speaking at a press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian described the act as “extremely malicious” and a serious threat to diplomatic safety.
During questioning, Murata reportedly told investigators that he intended to convey his personal views to embassy officials. He also suggested that if his message was not accepted, he had planned to take drastic action to draw attention.
The embassy has called on Japan to ensure the safety of foreign missions and prevent similar incidents. Security around diplomatic compounds in Tokyo is typically maintained around the clock.
In response, the GSDF described the arrest as “deeply regrettable” and stated that it would cooperate fully with authorities while handling the matter strictly based on the findings.
The incident comes at a time of already sensitive relations between the two nations, with ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region continuing to influence diplomatic exchanges.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full circumstances and motive behind the breach.
