In a tragic development, Bipin Joshi, a Nepalese Hindu student who was captured by Hamas during the group’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has been confirmed dead. His body was handed over by Hamas to Israeli authorities, marking a sorrowful moment amid renewed peace efforts in the region.
The confirmation came as world leaders gathered for the Middle East peace summit led by US President Donald Trump, where a landmark Gaza peace deal saw Hamas releasing 20 hostages alive. However, Joshi’s death cast a shadow over the otherwise hopeful progress.
Nepal’s Ambassador to Israel, Dhan Prasad Pandit, confirmed that Joshi’s remains were being transported to Tel Aviv late Monday night. “The body of Bipin Joshi was handed over to Israeli authorities by Hamas and is being taken to Tel Aviv,” Pandit said. The Israeli military also verified the return of four bodies, including Joshi’s, which will undergo DNA testing before being repatriated to Nepal. His final rites will be performed in Israel in coordination with the Nepali embassy.
Joshi’s story began with hope and ambition. In September 2023, he traveled from a small town in Nepal to Kibbutz Alumim, near the Gaza border, as part of an agricultural study and work program with 16 other students. The program aimed to teach modern Israeli farming techniques — a dream opportunity for many young Nepalese students.
That dream turned into tragedy when Hamas militants launched their deadly assault on October 7, 2023. As sirens warned of the attack, Joshi and his fellow students took shelter in a bunker. Soon after, Hamas fighters hurled grenades inside. One grenade exploded, injuring several students, but Joshi acted heroically — grabbing the second grenade and throwing it out before it could detonate, saving multiple lives. Moments later, he was captured and taken into Gaza.
In the days following his abduction, videos released by the Israeli military appeared to show Joshi being dragged into Gaza’s Shifa Hospital, which became his last known sighting. His family never gave up hope — his mother and sister even traveled to Israel and the United States to campaign for his release.
Joshi, who would have celebrated his 25th birthday on October 26, is now remembered as a symbol of courage and sacrifice. His death serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the human cost of the Gaza conflict, even as peace negotiators work toward a lasting resolution.
