On Wednesday, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini honored Shafali Verma, one of India's standout players from the Women's World Cup-winning team, for her exceptional performance in the esteemed tournament. The recognition ceremony occurred at the CM's residence, Sant Kabir Kutir, where she was presented with a shawl, a ₹1.5 crore cheque, and a 'Grade A' sports certification.
During the event, Chief Minister Saini lauded Shafali's remarkable achievements and declared her as the brand ambassador for the Haryana State Women’s Commission. He expressed immense pride in her contribution to Indian cricket, stating that her victory serves as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring athletes across the state.
In his social media message, Saini shared, “Today, I met Shafali Verma, beloved daughter of Haryana and integral to the team that led India to triumph in the Women's Cricket World Cup. Heartfelt congratulations on this remarkable achievement!”
He further emphasized that by awarding Shafali a monetary reward and certificate, the Haryana government illustrates its profound respect for sporting excellence. “In recognition of her exceptional performance, she has been awarded ₹1.50 crore in cash and a Grade A certificate. This gesture will motivate sporting talents in Haryana to strive for even loftier goals,” Saini remarked.
The Chief Minister underscored that Shafali’s achievements not only bring pride to Haryana but also uplift the entire nation. He articulated, “Through her dedication, Shafali has garnered glory for both Haryana and India. Her success serves as a model for all daughters of our state. I wish her ongoing success as she continues to elevate the name of our country.”
Saini also highlighted the state government’s commitment to nurture young talent, mentioning the establishment of approximately 2,000 sports nurseries across Haryana that train children and provide avenues for excellence in diverse sports. “Our mission is to cultivate Haryana as a premier sports state by developing talents from an early age,” he stated.
Expressing her gratitude during the ceremony, Shafali Verma conveyed her thanks to the Haryana government for the honor and support. “Winning the World Cup fills me with joy. The sporting spirit is deeply rooted in Haryana, and everyone here encourages athletics. I appreciate the Chief Minister and the government for this recognition,” she remarked.
Initially from Rohtak, Shafali stepped into the Indian squad as a last-minute replacement for the injured Pratika Rawal before the semifinal against Australia. While her contribution in the semifinal was limited, she delivered a stellar performance in the final against South Africa, scoring 87 runs and claiming 2 wickets for 36 runs, leading India to a 52-run victory and clinching the World Cup title.
Her outstanding performance earned her the title of 'Player of the Final', sealing a proud moment for both Indian cricket and Haryana. Shafali's confidence, dynamic batting, and determination have drawn admiration from teammates, coaches, and fans alike.
The young athlete's journey from local cricket pitches in Rohtak to international acclaim is a testament to her unwavering dedication. Shafali’s fearless batting style and calmness under pressure have made her an inspiration to many aspiring female athletes across India. Her achievements inspire young girls to engage in sports with ambition and purpose.
Under Chief Minister Saini’s guidance, Haryana is known for producing world-class athletes across multiple sports, including wrestling, boxing, cricket, and hockey. Recognizing Shafali Verma is part of a broader initiative to celebrate and foster sporting talent, particularly among women.
The ceremony also reflected the Haryana government’s commitment towards women’s empowerment and equitable representation in sports. By appointing Shafali as the brand ambassador of the Haryana State Women’s Commission, the government aims to motivate young girls to pursue their dreams with resolve and enthusiasm.
As the celebration concluded, Shafali conveyed her aspirations to keep representing India and achieve more accolades for her country. “Winning the World Cup was a dream realized, but I aim to enhance my skills and continue making India proud in future tournaments,” she concluded with optimism.
With numerous achievements ahead and her home state's support, Shafali Verma emerges as a promising star in the future of Indian cricket, reflecting the resilience and excellence that characterizes Haryana’s sporting ethos.
