Parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are experiencing heavy rains and thunderstorms, causing waterlogging in several areas and raising concerns over rising river levels.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert on Thursday for parts of Delhi and nearby regions, warning people to remain cautious until 6 pm. According to the IMD, areas in South West Delhi, South East Delhi, South Delhi, and New Delhi are expected to see moderate rains with thunderstorms and lightning throughout the day.
For the remaining parts of the Capital, the IMD issued a yellow alert, indicating the likelihood of light rains and scattered thunderstorms.
In the adjoining NCR, Faridabad, Gurugram, Jhajjar, Karnal, Panipat, and Sonipat are expected to face heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over the next three hours, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). These rains are accompanied by thunderstorms, making travel and outdoor activities risky.
Yamuna River Breaches Danger Level
The continuous rains over the past few days have caused the Yamuna River to breach the 207-metre danger mark, reaching 207.46 metres between 11 am and 12 noon on Thursday, officials said. This is the fifth time since 1963 that the river has crossed this level. Authorities have confirmed that the water level is expected to gradually recede, but nearby areas remain at risk of flooding.
Several low-lying areas in Delhi have already been inundated with water, including parts of Kashmere Gate, Civil Lines, and Mayur Vihar-Phase 1. Relief camps have been set up near the Delhi Secretariat, where offices of the Chief Minister, cabinet ministers, and key bureaucrats are located, as floodwaters have approached these areas.
Temperature and Weather Forecast
The IMD predicted that the minimum temperature in Delhi will settle at 24 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature may reach 33 degrees Celsius. The combination of high temperatures and heavy rainfall may lead to humid conditions across the Capital.
Impact on Daily Life
The heavy rainfall has caused severe waterlogging, affecting roads, traffic, and public transport. Commuters are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, and residents living near rivers and low-lying areas are urged to stay alert and follow government advisories.
Authorities are continuously monitoring the situation and have requested people to stay updated on weather alerts, river levels, and traffic updates. Emergency services are on standby to assist residents affected by floods and waterlogging.
The IMD and NDMA have repeatedly urged the public to exercise caution during thunderstorms, avoid open fields, and stay indoors whenever possible. Power cuts and disruption of mobile networks may occur in areas affected by flooding and heavy rains.
