In a remarkable performance, Matthew Schaefer etched his name in NHL history by scoring the overtime winner for the New York Islanders against the Utah Mammoth. Just 2:06 into OT, he executed a powerful one-timer from the right circle, assisted by Mathew Barzal. At 18 years and 70 days, Schaefer now holds the record for the youngest player to score an overtime goal in NHL regular-season history, surpassing Sidney Crosby's record set nearly 20 years ago. This goal marked his seventh of the season, highlighting a successful rookie campaign.
Amid a wave of youthful talent in the league, Schaefer's recent achievement is particularly noteworthy. Crosby's long-held record of scoring an OT goal at 18 years and 101 days has finally been broken. Even in playoff history, the youngest OT scorer was Don Gallinger at 17 years old in 1943. Schaefer's inclusion on this prestigious list reflects his burgeoning skill and confidence on the ice, and the Islanders celebrated as he led them to a fourth consecutive win.
The Islanders faced a challenging matchup, having played the previous night in Las Vegas, where they also clinched a win in overtime. Despite this, their energy and discipline shone through in Utah. Emil Heineman contributed by scoring for the second consecutive game, helping New York gain a solid start. Goalie David Rittich played a crucial role with 27 saves, displaying composure against the Mammoth's power-play attempts. Even with a condensed schedule, the Islanders exhibited strong teamwork and confidence.
In addition to the young talent, veteran Bo Horvat extended his point streak to eight games with an assist during this match. His impressive scoring run—six goals and six assists over this stretch—kept New York's offense potent. Jonathan Drouin also made a significant impact, netting the tying goal in the third period. Initially ruled a kick-in, video review overturned the call and allowed the goal, which was pivotal in pushing the game to overtime.
The Utah Mammoth presented a tough challenge, with JJ Peterka scoring their first goal from a clever Lawson Crouse pass. Later, Dylan Guenther added another during a 5-on-3 power play with a sharp one-timer after getting the puck back from Mikhail Sergachev. The Mammoth maintained pressure throughout the match, generating multiple scoring opportunities, with goaltender Karel Vejmelka making 19 saves to keep them competitive until the end.
Despite being handed multiple power plays, the Islanders' defensive line held firm. Rittich made a standout save during the third period, sliding over to block a fierce shot from Clayton Keller, keeping the team within striking distance until Drouin's equalizer.
In overtime, the Islanders took control. Barzal maneuvered the puck through the slot before delivering a precise pass to Schaefer, who unleashed a one-timer into the net. The celebration that followed was electrifying, underscoring not just a victory, but a monumental milestone for the 18-year-old rookie.
