Two-time Olympic medallist and former world champion PV Sindhu has spoken about the motivating effect of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s words on Indian sportspersons. She stressed that the Prime Minister places great importance on dedication, perseverance and the effort behind performances, not solely on trophies.
Valuing Effort Over Medals
Sindhu recalled that when athletes are disappointed at missing gold, Modi often reminds them that "winning any medal is a significant achievement." She said the Prime Minister consistently highlights the hard work that goes into each result, whether competitors miss the podium by a narrow margin or lose crucial chances.
"When I got the bronze, it was natural to feel disappointed about not clinching gold or a higher medal. But he would always tell us that it doesn’t matter; getting a medal itself is a big thing," Sindhu said.
She added that Modi’s acknowledgment reaches all athletes — including those who fall short by seconds or moments — underscoring that he appreciates their spirit and efforts beyond the final ranking.
Impact on the Indian Olympic Contingent
Sindhu remembered how the Indian team reacted after the Tokyo Olympics, when the women’s hockey side finished fourth and felt crestfallen. The Prime Minister’s words, she said, helped change their mood:
"He told them it didn’t matter; you have performed very well. Everyone was upset, but his appreciation made them feel as if they had achieved a great deal," she recalled.
She observed that Modi avoids framing athletes’ outcomes as losses, instead focusing on pride in their commitment:
"He would tell us that we have done much better and that the nation is proud of our efforts. That is the value he places on our work, and we are fortunate for that," she said.
Sindhu also reflected on a personal coincidence earlier in her career, noting a symbolic alignment between her milestones and Modi’s leadership period:
"Almost poetic in its own way, when Modiji became Prime Minister, I began winning. It feels like my journey and his tenure progressed side by side, shaping defining moments in my career," she added.
For Sindhu and many teammates, the Prime Minister’s sincere recognition is more than public praise; it reinforces the discipline, resolve and dedication that define those who represent India internationally.
