Authorities in Hue City have started collecting DNA samples from 1,595 unidentified martyrs' graves at the Phu Vang Martyrs' Cemetery. The initiative is part of the city's "500-day campaign" aimed at searching for, identifying and returning the names of fallen soldiers whose identities remain unknown.
Largest Number of Unidentified Graves
The Phu Vang Martyrs' Cemetery has the highest number of unidentified graves in Hue City. To complete the mission successfully, the Hue City Military Command formed special working teams and coordinated with local authorities to carry out the DNA sample collection process.
Careful and Respectful Process
Officials said every stage of the sampling process is being conducted according to strict technical procedures to ensure accuracy and respect. After samples are collected, each grave is carefully restored to its original condition while maintaining the dignity of the cemetery.
Helping Families Find Their Loved Ones
The DNA samples will be used for scientific testing to identify the remains of martyrs. Authorities believe the project will help many families finally learn the identities and resting places of their loved ones after years of uncertainty.
Part of Vietnam's Gratitude Campaign
Officials described the programme as an important humanitarian effort that reflects Vietnam's long-standing tradition of honoring those who sacrificed their lives for the country. Identifying the fallen is considered a meaningful way to repay their service and preserve national history.
Authorities Continue the Identification Effort
The Hue City Military Command said similar identification efforts will continue under the ongoing campaign. Authorities hope modern DNA technology will help identify more unidentified martyrs and provide long-awaited answers to their families.
