At least six soldiers, including a captain, were killed in a deadly IED blast targeting a military convoy in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Wednesday, officials confirmed. The attack, carried out by terrorists, comes amid a rising wave of militant activity in the region.
The convoy was ambushed in the Sultani area of the Kurram tribal district, near the Afghan border. According to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), Pakistan’s military media wing, the attackers opened fire as the convoy moved through the area. The explosion, caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) near Dogar, resulted in heavy casualties among the soldiers.
During the ensuing gunfight, seven terrorists were killed, highlighting the ongoing conflict between Pakistan security forces and militant groups. The security forces immediately cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to track down any remaining attackers.
Pakistan has witnessed a surge in terrorist attacks in recent years, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, with security personnel, police, and law enforcement increasingly targeted. This recent attack follows the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan’s (TTP) breach of a 2022 ceasefire agreement, which triggered intensified clashes and operations.
In recent days, Pakistani security forces successfully foiled two major infiltration attempts from Afghanistan, killing 25 militants, including four suicide bombers, and seizing a significant cache of weapons and explosives in North Waziristan and Kurram districts, according to the ISPR.
The deadly IED blast underscores the persistent threat of terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and highlights the continued sacrifices of Pakistan’s military personnel in combating extremist groups. Authorities have urged vigilance and reinforced security measures across the region to prevent further attacks.
