Fatal Collision in California Involves Illegal Indian Truck Driver

Fatal Collision in California Involves Illegal Indian Truck Driver

Post by : Rameen Ariff

California, October 24, 2025 – Jashanpreet Singh, a 21-year-old truck driver from Yuba City, California, who hails from Punjab, India, faces serious charges following a horrific accident on a Southern California freeway that resulted in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to four others. U.S. Homeland Security confirmed that Singh entered the country illegally in 2022 through the southern border.

The White House has strongly condemned California for issuing a commercial driver’s license (CDL) to Singh, highlighting it as an example of a troubling trend where illegal immigrants obtain driving privileges. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, “This individual entered the United States illegally in 2022 and has now caused a tragic crash claiming three lives. California issued him a commercial driver’s license despite this situation.”

Details of the Crash

The devastating incident took place on October 22, when Singh, reportedly under the influence of drugs, crashed his semi-truck into several vehicles on the freeway. Dashcam footage captured the moment Singh's truck struck a small white SUV in the center lane, before colliding with other cars as it swerved across lanes and ultimately crashed into a stationary truck on the freeway’s shoulder.

Singh now faces three counts of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, in addition to being charged with driving under the influence and injuring four individuals. Following the accident, he was arrested and is expected to be arraigned on Friday; the district attorney’s office has noted that Singh currently lacks legal representation.

White House Response and CDL Crackdown

This incident has fueled the Trump administration’s campaign to tighten restrictions on noncitizens seeking commercial driver’s licenses. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stressed that recent regulations limiting CDL access for noncitizens aim to avert similar tragedies in the future. “These families deserve justice, and there will be repercussions,” said Duffy, reaffirming the administration's steadfast stance against illegal immigrants acquiring commercial licenses.

Leavitt further revealed that ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) has filed a detainer for Singh. She added that this case highlights a “disturbing pattern” of criminal illegal aliens receiving CDLs in the U.S. The White House has criticized California for allegedly not adhering to federal guidelines regarding the issuance of commercial licenses to noncitizens.

California’s Defense

In response, the office of California Governor Gavin Newsom stated that Singh had federal employment authorization, which legally qualified him for a commercial driver’s license. They underscored that the state acted in compliance with federal law in issuing the CDL.

Background on Singh

Originally from Punjab, India, Singh moved to the United States illegally in 2022. He secured a commercial driver’s license in California, enabling him to operate a semi-truck. Authorities suspect that Singh was under the influence of drugs during the crash, leading to a multi-vehicle accident that tragically claimed three lives and injured four others.

Both the White House and the Department of Transportation have escalated efforts to ensure that illegal immigrants do not gain access to commercial driver’s licenses, pointing to numerous incidents of accidents caused by noncitizen drivers. This latest tragedy has reignited discussions regarding the responsibilities of federal and state governments in issuing CDLs to noncitizens.
