The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has revised its latest weather forecast and announced that the southwest monsoon is now expected to make its onset over Kerala on June 4, 2026. The updated projection comes after weather conditions delayed the monsoon's progress despite earlier indications that it could arrive much sooner.
The monsoon's arrival in Kerala is one of the most closely watched weather events in India because it marks the beginning of the country's primary rainy season. The annual weather system plays a critical role in agriculture, water resources, power generation, and the overall economy. Millions of farmers depend on the seasonal rainfall for sowing crops and maintaining agricultural productivity.
Earlier, the IMD had forecast the monsoon's arrival around May 26, significantly ahead of the normal onset date of June 1. However, atmospheric conditions did not remain favorable enough to support the anticipated advance. On May 29, the weather agency acknowledged that the southwest monsoon was unlikely to reach Kerala within the expected forecast window.
Meteorologists note that the exact date of monsoon onset does not necessarily determine the overall seasonal rainfall performance. While the arrival date often attracts widespread attention, the distribution and quantity of rainfall during the following months are considered more important for agriculture and water management planning across the country.
Weather experts are closely monitoring developments over the Arabian Sea and surrounding regions as conditions gradually become favorable for the monsoon's northward progression. Once the monsoon establishes itself over Kerala, it is expected to advance into other parts of southern India before spreading across the country in phases.
This year's rainfall pattern remains a key area of interest for policymakers, farmers, and businesses. Concerns about rainfall distribution and intensity continue to be discussed as authorities prepare for the upcoming agricultural season. Adequate and well-distributed rainfall will be essential for supporting crop production, maintaining reservoir levels, and ensuring water availability in several regions.
The revised forecast provides greater clarity regarding the expected timeline of the monsoon's arrival. As India enters the crucial rainy season, meteorological agencies will continue issuing regular updates to help governments, farmers, and the public prepare for changing weather conditions over the coming weeks.
