The IPL 2026 final has officially been relocated from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad, driven by significant disagreements over VIP ticket requests and logistical challenges. The match, initially slated for M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, is now set to occur at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium on May 31. This shift has ignited political discussions and stirred strong sentiments among cricket enthusiasts in Karnataka.
Reports indicate that a substantial number of complimentary tickets were demanded for politicians and other high-ranking officials, leading BCCI officials to grapple with the complexities of accommodating both public ticket sales and VIP requests. With the Chinnaswamy Stadium's capacity being around 40,000, meeting these demands proved increasingly unmanageable.
BCCI vice-president Arun Dhumal noted that Bengaluru was initially expected to host due to Royal Challengers Bengaluru having traditional rights for hosting the opening match and final. Yet, after briefing with the Karnataka State Cricket Association and local entities, the board resolved that managing the situation under the current regulations proved too challenging.
Compounding the situation, demands for approximately 10,000 more complimentary tickets than the usual allocation were deemed excessive for the limited seating. BCCI pointed out that international guests, business partners, sponsors, and ICC officials would be present, thereby necessitating a larger venue with an ample supply of tickets.
The Narendra Modi Stadium, boasting a capacity exceeding 130,000 spectators, emerged as a more pragmatic choice for hosting such a prominent occasion. It has successfully hosted a series of major cricket finals in recent years, reinforcing BCCI’s decision for better crowd management, security, and ticketing processes.
The relocation decision has stirred political unrest in Karnataka, with opposition figures accusing the government of fostering a “VIP culture” that has thwarted Bengaluru’s chances of hosting this prestigious cricket match. Nikhil Kumaraswamy, a youth leader from Janata Dal (Secular), condemned the pressure of political interests on sports administration, advocating for a focus on supporting true cricket supporters over influential individuals.
Karnataka government officials refuted claims tying political ticket demands to the venue change, attributing it instead to Ahmedabad's significant stadium capacity and better commercial prospects influencing BCCI's decision. They also defended the security protocols utilized during IPL matches held in Bengaluru this season.
Additionally, concerns surrounding crowd management and safety were highlighted in light of a tragic stampede that occurred during Royal Challengers Bengaluru celebrations in 2025. Local cricket authorities maintained they were adequately equipped to host the final; however, BCCI officials preferred a venue with enhanced logistical capabilities for the tournament's premier event.
This change means Ahmedabad will host the IPL final for the fourth time in the last five editions, further solidifying its status as a prime location for significant cricket events in India. Many Bengaluru fans have taken to social media to express their disappointment, citing political interference and VIP preferences as reasons for losing this critical sporting occasion.
