NEW DELHI: The India AI Impact Summit 2026, hosted at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, faced widespread criticism on its opening day due to logistical chaos and poor management. The five-day event, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was projected as a landmark global artificial intelligence summit and the first major international AI meeting hosted in the Global South. However, overcrowding, long queues and confusion at entry points overshadowed the event’s launch.
Participants, including founders, exhibitors and delegates from more than 100 countries, reported waiting for hours outside exhibition halls. Many complained about limited access to food and water, while some alleged that products from their stalls were stolen. Security sweeps and last-minute closures ahead of the prime minister’s arrival reportedly left several attendees stranded and frustrated.
Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw publicly apologised to visitors, acknowledging the mismanagement. He assured attendees that efforts were underway to improve arrangements, including the establishment of a “war-room” to address issues in real time. Organisers had expected tens of thousands of participants, ranging from government delegations to technology companies and students.
Despite the disruptions, the summit continues to draw high-profile global technology leaders, including Sam Altman of OpenAI and Sundar Pichai of Alphabet. The Gates Foundation also confirmed that Bill Gates will attend and deliver his keynote address as scheduled. Meanwhile, during his remarks, the IT minister urged major tech platforms such as YouTube, Meta, X and Netflix to operate within India’s constitutional framework, emphasizing stricter content regulations and stronger action against deepfakes.
