The Government of India has declared a one-day national mourning on July 13 to pay tribute to Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Father Amir of Qatar, who passed away at the age of 74.
The announcement was made on Sunday by the Ministry of External Affairs, stating that the decision was taken as a mark of respect for the former Qatari ruler.
During the national mourning, the Indian national flag will be flown at half-mast across the country on Monday, and there will be no official entertainment throughout the day.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the passing of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani and described him as a visionary leader who transformed Qatar through development and prosperity.
In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister said Sheikh Hamad would also be remembered as a true friend of India. He recalled meeting the former Emir during his visit to Qatar in February 2024.
Prime Minister Modi also conveyed his condolences to Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, as well as to the royal family and the people of Qatar.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju is expected to travel to Qatar to convey condolences on behalf of the Government of India.
The visit is intended to express India's respect for the late leader and stand in solidarity with the people of Qatar during the mourning period.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani served as the Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013. During his rule, Qatar experienced major economic, social and cultural growth, strengthening its position on the global stage.
He led significant economic investments and expanded international partnerships, while Qatar became the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) under his leadership.
Following his passing, Qatar announced a four-day public mourning period, beginning on Sunday.
Relations between India and Qatar grew significantly during Sheikh Hamad's reign. The number of Indian nationals living and working in Qatar increased substantially during this period.
Sheikh Hamad also made official visits to India in 1999, 2005 and 2012, reflecting the strong and growing relationship between the two countries.
India's decision to observe a national mourning reflects the importance of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani's contributions to Qatar and the close ties he shared with India. His leadership played a major role in Qatar's development, while also strengthening bilateral relations that continue to remain significant.
