In a significant move to enhance national defense, India has granted in-principle approval for a military procurement package totaling approximately $6.3 billion (520 billion rupees). This decision was formalized by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) on Friday, which serves as the government's primary authority on defense purchases.
As outlined in an official statement, the DAC, led by the Defence Minister and comprising senior military officials, sanctioned the procurement of various advanced military systems. The total value of the acquisitions is pegged at around 520 billion rupees ($6.3 billion).
While the government hasn't disclosed the timeline for these purchases, details on whether the equipment will be sourced internationally or produced domestically remain unannounced.
The defense package includes cutting-edge systems for the Indian Army, incorporating:
These acquisitions are designed to bolster the operational effectiveness and defense readiness of the armed forces.
Additionally, the DAC has sanctioned acquisitions for the Indian Navy, which will involve naval mines, shipborne drones, and a testing facility for enhancing maritime defense and surveillance.
Furthermore, the Indian Air Force plans to acquire a high-altitude unmanned aircraft platform devoted to intelligence collection and remote sensing tasks.
In recent years, India has been striving to minimize its reliance on Russia, its historical primary supplier of military goods. Concurrently, New Delhi has expanded its defense partnerships with nations like the United States and France, as well as boosting domestic production capabilities.
Currently, India's defense budget stands at $85 billion, and the necessity to strengthen military resources gained urgency following a four-day conflict with Pakistan last year, emphasizing the importance of upgrading defense infrastructures.
Moreover, India is speeding up the modernization of its naval forces in response to China's increasing influence in key shipping corridors across the Indian Ocean.
Last December, New Delhi began its order for at least 75 ships and submarines, with the majority expected to be constructed domestically.
Earlier this year, the Indian government also approved a substantial $39 billion in defense purchases, including Rafale fighter jets from France, all part of a broader military modernization initiative.
