India and the United States are talking about a new trade agreement that will help both countries. This deal could make it easier for goods to move between the two nations by lowering taxes (called tariffs), removing trade problems, and improving how products are delivered (supply chains).
Right now, teams from both countries are meeting in India to work on the first part of the deal, called the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). A team from the US, led by a top trade official, is in India from June 4 to June 10 for these talks.
An official said both countries are focused on making this deal fair and helpful. They are talking about how to make trade smoother, lower taxes on goods, and make supply chains stronger.
Back in February 2025, India and the US agreed to work toward doubling their trade to $500 billion by the year 2030. To reach this goal, they plan to finish the first part of this big trade deal by September or October 2025.
This week's meetings are a follow-up to earlier talks in May, when India’s Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, visited the US. There, he met with US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
