India has begun debating a landmark proposal aimed at increasing women’s representation in Parliament, a move that could significantly reshape the country’s political landscape.
The bill, supported by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, seeks to reserve one-third of seats for women in Parliament and state legislatures, potentially marking a historic shift in political inclusion.
If implemented, the measure would fast-track an earlier law passed in 2023 and could bring hundreds of women into legislative roles, addressing long-standing gender imbalance in Indian politics.
However, the proposal is closely tied to a controversial plan to redraw electoral boundaries, which could increase the number of seats in Parliament from 543 to around 850, triggering widespread debate.
Opposition parties have raised concerns that the delimitation process, based on population data, could alter the balance of power between northern and southern states, potentially benefiting the ruling party.
Leaders from southern states have warned that population-based seat allocation may reduce their representation, despite stronger economic performance and lower population growth compared to northern regions.
Supporters of the bill argue that increasing women’s participation will strengthen democracy, bring greater focus on issues such as health, education, and gender equality, and inspire more women to enter politics.
Meanwhile, protests and political tensions have begun to emerge, with opposition leaders demanding transparency and broader consultation before implementing the changes.
The bill requires a two-thirds majority in both houses of Parliament to pass, making its outcome uncertain amid growing political debate.
