PM Modi Launches India’s First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train, connecting Howrah near Kolkata to Kamakhya Junction in Guwahati. This modern overnight service creates a high-speed rail link between West Bengal and Assam, both currently preparing for elections.

The train was flagged off from Malda Town in West Bengal, while the return journey from Guwahati to Howrah was launched virtually.

Designed to meet India’s growing travel needs, the fully air-conditioned Vande Bharat sleeper train promises an airline-like experience at affordable fares. It will make long-distance travel faster, safer, and more comfortable, reducing the journey time by about 2.5 hours on the Howrah–Guwahati route. This will also encourage religious tourism in the region.

The train is built to reach speeds up to 180 km/h, operating at 120-130 km/h. It features ergonomic berths with a smooth ride ensured by a top-class suspension system. Advanced disinfectant technology kills 99% of germs, and fresh linens and towels are provided to passengers. Safety is enhanced with the indigenous Kavach automatic protection system and onboard surveillance. Automatic sliding doors stay closed during travel and open only at stations.

Passengers will also enjoy local cuisine included in their ticket price. Assamese dishes will be served on the Kamakhya to Howrah journey, while Bengali food will be offered on the return trip.

Ticket prices range from Rs 2,300 to Rs 3,600, depending on the travel class. This new service marks a major step in modernizing India’s rail travel, combining speed, safety, comfort, and local flavor for passengers.
