The night sky over Navi Mumbai sparkled brighter than ever as Team India scripted history, lifting their maiden ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 trophy at the DY Patil Stadium. In a thrilling final on Sunday, India Women defeated South Africa by 52 runs, delivering a commanding all-round performance that will be remembered as one of the greatest moments in Indian cricket.
Led by the dynamic Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian side showcased skill, composure, and teamwork throughout the tournament. Standout performances from Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma, and Smriti Mandhana powered India to their first-ever world title in women’s cricket — a triumph that echoed the spirit of India’s iconic victories in 1983 and 2011.
Batting first after winning the toss, India set a formidable total of 298 for 7. The opening partnership between Smriti Mandhana (45) and Shafali Verma (87) provided the perfect platform, stitching together a fluent 100-run stand. Deepti Sharma’s steady 58 and quick contributions from Richa Ghosh (34) further strengthened India’s innings.
Despite tight bowling spells from South Africa, India’s top order maintained composure, attacking at crucial moments to keep the scoreboard ticking. The innings showcased the balance between aggression and strategy that has defined India’s campaign this season.
South Africa began their chase confidently, with Tazmin Brits and Laura Wolvaardt putting up a solid 50-run partnership. However, the breakthrough came through a stunning direct hit from Amanjot Kaur, which triggered a collapse.
Young pacer Sree Charani made an impact in her very first over, while Shafali Verma, after her brilliant knock with the bat, shone with the ball by removing Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp in quick succession.
The star of the night was undoubtedly Deepti Sharma, who tore through South Africa’s middle order with a sensational spell of 5 for 39. Despite a valiant 101 from Wolvaardt, the Proteas were bowled out for 246, falling short by 52 runs as India sealed a historic maiden World Cup title.
As soon as India lifted the trophy, celebrations erupted across the country and around the world. Indian-origin global business leaders, including Satya Nadella and Sundar Pichai, took to social media to hail the victory.
Nadella congratulated the team, calling it “a truly historic day for women’s cricket,” while Pichai said the win brought back “memories of 1983 and 2011,” referring to India’s landmark World Cup triumphs under Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a ₹51 crore reward for the team and support staff to honor their achievement.
This victory marks a turning point in Indian women’s cricket — a symbol of dedication, resilience, and the power of teamwork. Under Harmanpreet Kaur’s inspiring leadership, India’s women have not only claimed a world title but also ignited hope and pride among millions of fans.
With the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup trophy in their hands, Team India has shown that their time has truly arrived — breaking barriers, making history, and paving the way for the next generation of champions.
